Project Description
Bookaroo is a book subscription service, targeted towards parents of young children who wish to help promote reading at home. In schools, children learn in a variety of ways, which makes literacy so important, even at a young age. However, children still face barriers in their abilities to read, regardless of the level at which they read at. It is important that children be given the proper resources to help them improve their reading comprehension, as this is an essential skill that is very useful to developing a child’s brain. We believe that an affordable service that helps cater reading materials to help develop knowledge and comprehension would be beneficial to parents and educators alike, to help give their children every opportunity to grow and develop to be the people that they want to be.
Business Name: Bookaroo
Tagline: Leaps and Bounds of Learning
Features: The service is for children from Kindergarten to 6th grade to encourage reading at home, and the packages deliver right to your home for an affordable price. There will be three separate age range packs to choose from: the Joey Pack for Preschool-Kindergarten, the Marsupial Pack for 1st-3rd grade, and the Wallaby pack for 4th-6th grade. Each package will contain 3 books at the chosen reading level, and subscribers will be able to upgrade the packs as their child grows and develops their reading abilities.
Target Audience: Educators (teachers, parents, guardians), Educational Institutions (schools, libraries, daycare), Parents of young children
Problem Addressed: Learning how to read is a vital skill for life. Some children struggle to read and don’t read at the same levels, so this can be a challenge for schools to accommodate when they have a great variety of students to attend to. Students can feel less motivated to read without the correct materials to prepare them.
Possible Reason for Problem: Some children can be way ahead in their reading comprehension but have no books to accommodate their current ability. Similarly, other children can also be way behind in their reading comprehension for a variety of reasons, such as learning disabilities and a lack of access to good materials.
Hypothesis: With a service that caters to educators and promotes literacy and provides reading materials at a variety of levels of reading comprehension, children can better their reading skills and improve their comprehension over time.

Mascot Character Design
Rudy the Kangaroo is the design for a brand mascot for Bookaroo. I wanted to come up with an face for the brand that made it welcoming and appealing both to the parents who will be using the site and the children who will be benefitting from the service. The animal behind this brand is a kangaroo, so I wanted to design a character that fits that overall look and feel for the brand. He has a variety of different expressions and poses that are used throughout the different branding pieces for Bookaroo, and he is featured in nearly every design element.

Project Elements

Website
This will be the main focus of the project: a website that contains all of the necessary details about the company and where clients can sign up and manage their subscriptions. I used a lot of illustration and photos (mine and stock illustrations with permission) to fill the site. The site was built in Figma as an operational prototype with 7 navigational pages to click through.

Mailing Box
This is the physical box that is mailed to the customer who orders a monthly subscription. It is the main means in which the books are delivered to the customer on a monthly basis. The boxes are made of cardboard and have the measurements of 12 inches wide, 12 inches long, and 2.5 inches tall, and built to fit an average-sized book and encompass an average size of most children's books. Along with the books, these boxes also hold the bonus items and the reading guide for parents that also come with every box.

Animated Advertisement
This is a short animation created to serve as a video tutorial of sorts, to explain in the simplest terms how the subscription boxes work and how the company operates. It is 30 seconds long and features Rudy, the main mascot of the brand. The animation is simple and easy to follow, using the brand colors from above.

Passport Sticker Poster
This passport is an interactive sticker poster that a new client receives with their first box. In each box, there is an exclusive monthly sticker (in addition to the 3 unique designs) to be put on the poster to track how many boxes they have received. When they reach a certain threshold and fill up all the spots on the poster, there is a reward. The purpose of this item is to give incentive to long-term subscription and a layer of interactivity that comes along with the other items from the boxes.
